Kojic Acid is a natural compound produced by certain species of fungi, particularly Aspergillus oryzae, during the fermentation of rice or soy sauce. It works by inhibiting the enzyme tyrosinase, which is essential for melanin synthesis — the pigment responsible for skin color.
However, Kojic Acid is chemically unstable and prone to oxidation, which often leads to discoloration and reduced efficacy in finished formulations.
To overcome these issues, Kojic Dipalmitate was developed as a more stable derivative of Kojic Acid. By esterifying Kojic Acid with palmitic acid, chemists created a molecule that retains the skin-brightening activity but is significantly more resistant to oxidation, light, and heat.
