Resveratrol is a natural compound found in red grape skin, Japanese knotweed (polygonum cuspidatum), peanuts, blueberries and some other berries. It is a powerful antioxidant produced by some plants to protect them against environmental stresses. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals, which are believed to be the cause of aging.
Although red grapes are the most widely known source, natural resveratrol sources are numerous and varied. There are small amounts of resveratrol in many human foods, including cranberries, blueberries, pistachios and dark chocolate. Approximately 70 plant species contain resveratrol, knotweed is the plant source with the highest resveratrol content.
Resveratrol is available as dietary supplements from red wine extracts, grape seed extracts and Japanese knotweed extracts among others. Most supplements on the market are derived from Japanese knotweed because this plant has one of the highest concentrations of resveratrol found in nature.
Natural resveratrol has CIS and trans structures. In nature, it mainly exists in trans conformation. The two structures can be combined with glucose to form CIS and trans resveratrol glycosides. The CIS and trans resveratrol glycosides can release resveratrol under the action of glycosidases in the intestine. Under UV irradiation, trans resveratrol can be converted into cis isomers.

Resveratrol is becoming a favorite ingredient in skincare because of its natural anti-aging and protective effects. It helps fight wrinkles, calms skin irritation, and shields the skin from UV rays and pollution. You’ll often find it in serums, creams, sunscreens, and lotions where it works to keep skin looking smooth, healthy, and youthful.
In the supplement world, resveratrol is best known for its role in supporting heart health, immune balance, and liver detox. It’s a powerful antioxidant, so it helps the body fight oxidative stress and maintain overall wellness. That’s why it’s often made into capsules, tablets, and softgels, either on its own or combined with other nutrients in anti-aging and vitality blends.
Resveratrol is also added to functional foods and drinks to give them an extra health boost. It supports joint health, brain function, and daily energy, all while protecting cells from stress. You might see it in energy drinks, nutrition shakes, fortified snacks, or wellness beverages, making it easy to get the benefits as part of everyday nutrition.
Resveratrol and trans-resveratrol are two different structural forms of the same compound, differing mainly in their molecular spatial arrangement and biological activity. Resveratrol is a natural polyphenol found in plants such as grapes and blueberries, while trans-resveratrol is its isomer under specific conditions and generally exhibits higher stability and bioavailability.
Resveratrol has the molecular formula C₁₄H₁₂O₃ and exists in two isomers: cis- and trans-. The difference lies in the arrangement of the double bonds.
The trans structure may isomerize under light or high temperatures, converting to the cis structure, leading to reduced activity. Therefore, products containing resveratrol should be stored away from light to maintain their effectiveness.
Resveratrol is mainly found in foods such as grape skins, red wine, and peanuts, with trans-resveratrol making up a higher proportion (over 80%). The cis-structure is usually converted from the trans-structure during processing or storage.
Most commercially available resveratrol supplements are in the trans-structure (labeled as “trans-resveratrol”) because of its higher activity and easier purification. Some studies have also explored improving its bioavailability through nanotechnology or liposome encapsulation.
Our Resveratrol Powder is extracted from Polygonum cuspidatum (Japanese Knotweed) roots using solvent-free supercritical CO₂ technology, delivering ≥98% pure trans-resveratrol (HPLC-verified) – the bioactive isomer with optimal bioavailability.
Batch Testing:
Purity: HPLC quantification of trans-resveratrol.
Contaminants: Heavy metals (ICP-MS), 510-pesticide residue scan, residual solvents (GC-FID).
Microbiology: ISO-compliant pathogen screening.
Certificates: COA, MSDS, ISO 22000, Non-GMO, Halal/Kosher per shipment.

What’s better, resveratrol or trans-resveratrol?
Trans-resveratrol is generally considered the preferred form due to its higher biological activity and broader research backing. While both trans- and cis-resveratrol forms occur naturally, the former is most commonly used in supplements.
Which form of resveratrol is best?
In the case of resveratrol, trans-resveratrol is the best fit for your health. Trans-resveratrol is also more stable in powder form, making it ideal to take as a supplement.
Is resveratrol and trans-resveratrol the same thing?
Not exactly. Resveratrol is a general term for a compound that exists in multiple forms, whereas trans-resveratrol and cis-resveratrol are specific forms. Of these, trans-resveratrol is the more stable, active, and better-studied, which is why it’s the one most commonly used in supplements and research. So, while trans-resveratrol and resveratrol are sometimes used interchangeably — even in research — there’s still a subtle distinction between the two terms.
Can resveratrol be used as a supplement?
Yes, resveratrol can also be found in supplement form; however, since each individual’s health condition is different, the use of supplements should be planned with a physician’s evaluation. If there are existing drug treatments or chronic diseases, resveratrol supplementation should not be preferred without a doctor’s recommendation.
